Big Loop Rodeo - May
Summer is approaching and it's time to start planning adventures. Here are a few uncommon and totally unforgettable events. (Scroll down to see pictures. Click to enlarge.)

Big Loop Rodeo
Jordan Valley, Oregon
May 19-20
No tourists, no commercialism, no circuit riders or governing bodies, just a weekend rodeo (and hootenanny) that draws its participants from all the remote ranches within a 100-mile or so radius. It’s one of the last authentic, true-grit rodeos left in America. The closest airport is Boise, Idaho, about 1.5 hours away.

Naadam Festival
Ulaanbataar, Mongolia
July 11-13
This is Mongolia’s version of the Olympics – a three-day pageant of nomadic culture and outdoor sporting event consisting of wrestling, archery and horse racing, that’s been taking place since the days of Genghis Khan. Families converge from all across the steppe to participate.

Bonneville Speed Week, SCTA
Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah
August 11-17
The most famous speed trials event in the world for anything on wheels. It’s not called the “Temple of Speed” for nothing.

Los Encierros de Cuellar (Running of the Bulls)
Cuellar, Segovia, Spain
August 26-30
The oldest running of the bulls in the world, dating from the 13th century. All of the history, drama and excitement, with fewer suffocating crowds. Read more from our Nov-Dec Man of Character, Ernest Hemingway.

Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials, BUB
Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah
August 26-30
The same thing as earlier in the month but exclusively for motorcycles. Read about Brough Superior's 2011 victory from Bench&Loom co-founder here.

Mountain Man Rendezvous
Fort Bridger, Wyoming
August 31-September 3
Just like those held on the frontier at the height of the fur trade in the early 1800s, this rendezvous – the largest in North America – takes place at the historic fort founded by legendary mountain man, trapper, explorer and guide Jim Bridger. Closest airport is Salt Lake City, Utah, about 1.5 hours away.

Laytown Horse Races
Laytown Strand, County Meath, Ireland
1st week of September (dates to be announced)
A thoroughbred horse race on a beach in Ireland that has been going strong for 143 years. Expect a refreshingly informal event, lots of betting, lots of stout beer, beautiful horseflesh, and famous Irish hospitality. (Yes, this is the race that was alluded to in The Quiet Man with John Wayne.)

Goodwood Revival
Chichester, West Sussex, England
September 14-16
There is simply no way to adequately describe “Glorious Goodwood.” Historic automobiles, motorcycles, airplanes, and thousands of people dressed in pre-1960s attire, all at Goodwood Manor, the private estate of Lord March. It’s the best event of its kind in the world. Much more on this later.
